Local company Markerstudy Group didn’t pull any punches in raising £43,355 for Rusthall Tunbridge Wells Amateur Boxing Club (Rusthall ABC) at a knockout event at Salomons last month. It presented a cheque for the impressive amount to Head Coach Billy Hall at the club today (17th March).
The business, known for ‘putting the fun in insurance’, staged a boxing tournament to find champions to ‘put ‘em up’ for the company at an industry-wide national competition later this year. Markerstudy Group has donated all money from the raffle and auction to the boxing club, which has been operating without much-needed funding, and doubled the amount raised on the night. It enlisted the help of Billy Hall to help prepare its contenders and act as referee, and showcased the talents of the Rusthall Tunbridge Wells ABC’s members with training and boxing displays at the event.
Rusthall ABC is part of Rusthall Community and Youth Project and hosts three sessions a week to build confidence, improve fitness and teach discipline, to have a positive impact on young people. Membership has grown steadily and it now trains more than 100 amateur boxers aged from eight to 52. Billy, alongside Assistant Coach, Gerry Roebottom, has produced 20 county champions and one national champion since 2003.
Billy said he plans to use some of the funds to take members to train with Olympic Gold boxing champion, Luke Campbell for a weekend, and added: “This phenomenal amount of money means so much for the club, and secures our future in the community. We’ve been struggling to survive without funding and we simply can’t thank Markerstudy Group and all the boxers enough for their hard work, dedication and generosity. They’re all winners in my eyes!”
Seven steely staff from around the UK stepped up to the challenge to fight at the event, but three local employees boxed clever to be named overall champions. Andrew ‘Blast’ Furness, HR Service Centre Assistant from the Haywards Heath office, Tony ‘T-Unit’ Wickham, Head of Plumbing and Mark ‘Del Boy’ Wiggins, Social Media Executive, both from Tunbridge Wells, will now undergo a special 12-week training programme and will represent Markerstudy Group at the Insurance Age Fight Night on 19th June in London.
